Monday Ramblings

It's official. I don't like Facebook.
There are all these things you can do, see, like compare your friends to each other in different categories... and what's the category I get "Most ___" in?
Most Studious.
I give up.

In other news, my house is overrun with strange men in overalls. Actually, not so much overalls as jeans and paint(?)- stained T-shirts. I volunteered to take a week off work[1] so that I could stay home and babysit the builders we've hired to convert our attic into a habitable space. By the end of the week we should have a large room upstairs with windows and everything. Photos will follow, of course.
I must confess, though, I feel a bit like an intruder in my own home today. And it's slightly disconcerting to be sitting comfortably in my lounge attempting to appear nonchalant, with the sounds of someone cutting holes in my roof - punctuated with occasional raucous man-laughter - assaulting my ears.

I had grandiose ideas of spending my whole week writing. Well so far, you've just read the fruits of my labour. Because first I had to do the laundry, of course. And then there was a pile of ironing to do because it was cluttering up the space where I wanted to sit and write. Although I'm not sitting there now because by the time I'd finished the ironing, the sun had moved overhead and so was no longer streaming in through the windows like it was earlier.

Aahh, there ya go... nothing like the sweet sound of an angle-grinder and men yelling to each other to get the creative juices flowing...

oh boy i know exactly what you mean.

do you have to be home the whole time? can you take your laptop to a coffee shop and write there for an hour?

we had workers at our house all last summer, remodeling bathrooms, and fixing collapsing basement walls, and rerouting gutters.... they never left before 7 p.m., because they liked to avoid the rush hour traffic. i felt like our life wasn't ours...

hope the attic is done quickly.

Laurie - I sort of took the week off so someone could be here all the time. We have an innate mistrust of workmen, sorry to say (probably a by-product of coming from South Africa) so I do sort of have to be here all the time. I had some work to do today but tomorrow morning is earmarked for writing. It's all mine!

i can just imagine how hard it was to take a week off work...

here we're mostly required to be here when workers are in the house--i guess so they don't get blamed for breakage or theft.

it's hard to arrange, sometimes... we need to get our chimney cleaned, and we're putting it off because neither of us can spare a day from work right now.

hope the writing went well.

Angel - Yeah, torture.

Laurie - That's pretty much why I chose to stay home this week. Plus, the idea of just being home for a week really appealed to me. The writing is going OK but I'd forgotten how tiring it is to stare at the screen for long periods of time with unbroken concentration. I'm developing a twitchy eye..!

"In other news, my house is overrun with strange men in overalls." Eesh - there are worse things than that, you know! =) Seriously, it is highly disruptive and I do hope things get completed soon.

LiVEwIRe - Hm... it sort of all depends on what the men look like, don't you think? Perhaps I should've specified: Leprachauns in overalls..!

Buddess - Inspired? Not so much. Amused, perhaps...

Angel - Dunno. Maybe I inhaled too much cement dust & my brain cells got all glued together..?

Lori - Thanks for stopping by!
